What we'll be learning this 3rd Nine Weeks of school:
Daily and Weekly practice
Each week in our "Everything Binder" we continue to practice our writing and editing skills through D.O.L. and Mentor Sentences, which helps us practice subject/verb agreement, correct punctuation usage, (including commas, apostrophes, and quotation marks), nouns, proper nouns, abbreviations and capitalization. We also work on our Mountain Language skills (common nouns, proper nouns, subjects, predicates, contractions, compound words, classifying, root words, prefixes, suffixes, etc.) each day. We work on our reading strategies through short stories and activities, too.
Language Arts (Social Studies and Science Integration)-Reading and Writing Workshops:
* Gather information and conduct short research projects;
* Describes characters and their traits/motivations/feelings;
* Determine author's purpose and distinguish own point of view;
* Sequencing, compare/contrast, determine type of text, first or third person perspective
* commas, quotations marks, regular and irregular nouns and verbs,
subjects, predicates, pronouns
* Main idea of text and supporting details
* moral, theme, lesson in fiction
* Non-fiction text features, context clues and sequence
* Informational and Narrative Writing - research and write short
reports or do Lit. Circles projects (Compare/Contrast FDR and Lyndon B. Johnson, Democracy/Elections, Electoral College - Write a campaign speech and have class elections for Class President, volcanoes - types of volcanoes, supervolcanoes, etc. - and how they relate to heat and magnets/earth structure and layers)
* Opinion/Persuasive Writing - pros and cons of a topic -
presenting personal side/opinion in an organized, logical and
intelligent way
* Narrative Writing - Practicing and mastering the writing process

Math Workshop
* Shapes (quadrilaterals)
* Area and Perimeter (review and retake test at beginning of 3rd 9 weeks)
* Fractions, measurement, time to nearest minute and elapsed time
* Multiplication through 12 (SHOULD BE MASTERED BY THE END OF 3rd GRADE) - Relationship between multiplication and division
* Daily problem solving skills - R.I.S.E. (Read, Identify, Solve, Explain)

* Begin Magnets and finish at beginning of 4th 9 weeks
* Rocks and Minerals/volcanoes (finish from 2nd 9 weeks)
* Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Thurgood Marshall, Lyndon B. Johnson (civil rights, Women's rights, WWII, government, diligence, perseverance)
Word Work/Spelling
There will be a new unit every week to week and a half. Words and test dates will be on the same page as homework assignments - "Due Dates for Homework and Projects".
